Food has a direct bearing on our consciousness and feelings and it also generates varied emotions in human beings. From bliss to anger to contentment or restlessness, everything depends upon the intake and kind of food.
Yoga gives a special focus on food to bring a perfect synchronization between body, mind and spirit. As per yoga, foods have been categorized into three parts, each with their own advantages and harms. Here, we would discuss the importance and types of food for health, as per yoga:
Sattvic stands for ‘pure essence’ and a Sattvic diet comprises of only pure food for true health. Besides nourishing the body, this purest form of food calms the mind and purifies the whole being. More so, this kind of food helps the body to realize its maximum potential and achieve the height of spirituality. The list of a Sattvic diet includes fresh fruits, green vegetables, complete grains, curative spices, herbs, milk, lentils, nuts, seeds, beans etc.
As per yoga, Rajasic food is eaten moderately even when it offers extra stimulation to the body for overall health. At one end, if such foods are known to produce ambition, greed, desire, anger and selfishness, then it also produces sexuality, fantasy and sensuality. Eaten occasionally, a certain amount of Rajasic foods is needed to be with today’s world. The list of foods includes onion, garlic, tea, soda, hot spices coffee, tobacco, etc.

Tamasic foods are a kind of forbidden food under the tenets of yoga as they neither help the mind nor the body. They reduce the body’s resistance and fill the mind with pessimism.
